International Organization for Migration joins IATI

  • May 5, 2017

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN migration agency, has joined IATI as its latest member.

With 166 member states and offices in over 100 countries, IOM works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to promote and protect the rights of migrants, as well as to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people.

“IOM’s reporting in accordance with the IATI Standard will benefit already existing initiatives, with the aim of improving accountability and efficient humanitarian programming”

IOM is committed to start publishing information on its results and activities to IATI within a year from joining. The organisation wants their data to be available and used by a variety of stakeholders, including academia, governments, partner organisations, beneficiaries and the general public.

IOM see their commitment to IATI and transparency as important elements in further pursuing long-standing commitment to maintain the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness in operations. The organisation decided to join after subscribing to the Grand Bargain, which commits its signatories to greater transparency and accountability.

William Lacy Swing, IOM Director General said: “IOM considers transparency as key in making humanitarian action accountable, towards beneficiaries, donors and the general public. IOM’s reporting in accordance with the IATI Standard will benefit already existing initiatives, with the aim of improving accountability and efficient humanitarian programming”.

“As a member of IATI and signatory to the Grand Bargain, we are committed to actively contributing to the development of the standard to ensure that it effectively meets the needs of the humanitarian community.”

The agency joins over 80 IATI members from across the development, aid and humanitarian sectors. More information on these organisations and how to join IATI can be found in our Members’ Assembly section.
